A nitrogen generator separates oxygen and other trace gases from compressed air, leaving a concentrated nitrogen stream. The two most common technologies are membrane separation and pressure swing adsorption. Membrane generators use hollow polymer fibers that allow oxygen, water vapor, and some argon to permeate through the fiber walls more quickly than nitrogen. The remaining gas, rich in nitrogen, exits the membrane module at the desired purity. PSA generators employ two vessels filled with carbon molecular sieve (CMS) that preferentially adsorbs oxygen under pressure. While one vessel generates nitrogen, the other regenerates by depressurizing, creating a continuous supply. Both methods rely on clean, dry compressed air as feedstock, and must be paired with appropriate pre-filtration and drying equipment to protect the separation media from contamination and moisture damage.
